NOTES FROM RANDY MALKIN. UMPIRING AT THE LITTLE LEAGUE WESTERN REGIONALS.
Randy Malkin is representing MVLL, District 6, and Arizona as an umpire this year. He is sending us updates of his days there.
Just wanted to give you an update about what is happening here at Western Region World Series Championships. Games began yesterday, two of which I worked on the field. The crowds for the games I worked were small, due to the locations of the teams... Montana/Wyoming/etc... but the game last night between So Cal & Nevada had nearly 7000 fans in attendance. What a sight!

Just wanted to give you an update about what is happening here at Western Region World Series Championships. Games began yesterday, two of which I worked on the field. The crowds for the games I worked were small, due to the locations of the teams... Montana/Wyoming/etc... but the game last night between So Cal & Nevada had nearly 7000 fans in attendance. What a sight!
Today at 12:30 pm I will be working my first plate... what a blast this is! Working with a bunch of great experienced umpires in this setting is amazing. Tonight (7:30 pm) I work the game between Hawaii & So Cal, so it should be another huge crowd with lots of noise. My oldest son Kyle has been invited to play the National Anthem prior to the one of the games, but we don't know which one yet. So that will be a lot of fun to see him perform that as well. This is HUGE deal across the country as we have witnessed here.

MVLL squares off against Montana in a must win game
MVLL will meet Montana today at 7:00 PM in a must win game. MVLL is 1 - 1 and will need to win out to qualify for a spot in the Semi-Finals. Montana played Northern California last night, losing 12 - 2. Northern Calif will square off against Hawaii today at 4:00 PM, with one of those teams going 2 - 1. Montana gave Hawaii a tough game on Thursday night losting 14 - 8, and coming up short with bases loaded.
MVLL needs to minimize runs allowed in order to avoid being pushed out, if there is a three way tie at the end of pool play at 3 - 1. MVLL has allowed 5 runs, Northern Calif has allowed 3, and Hawaii has allowed 10. The coaches have taken the 1 game at a time approach, and the kids fully understand that we cannot look past each game. The kids have been loose, and will be ready to play tonight. The schedule has favored MVLL with a day off after each game. MVLL will play tonight, and again tomorrow morning against Northern Calif. After that, it will be a wait and see what the seedings will be.
Coach Erickson and the staff have communicated to the team, that the tournament starts TODAY!!! Game updates will be posted live through this web site. Just keep on hitting "REFRESH"

ARIZONA WINS 16 - 0 AGAINST ALASKA
MVLL BEATS ALASKA 16 - 0
Behind solid pitching, MVLL threw a 1 hitter, shut out to beat Alaska 16 - 0 today. MVLL pitched Matt Lewis, Greg Hopkins, and closed out with Ethan Rickert. MVLL Scatted 18 hits, and respectfully ran the bases station to station. MVLL showed some real class by not running up the score. MVLL will take the day off and come back to play Montana at 7 PM on Saturday.

MVLL will play Alaska today after a days rest and preparation. MVLL will take batting practice and fielding practice this morning and then head to the fields around Noon. The team is extremely motiviated to win out, being that Hawaii is 1 - 0, along with Northern Calif. MVLL will be off again tomorrow, and then will play out on Saturday against Montana, and then finish up pool play against North California on Sunday Morning. MVLL must minimize the number of runs allowed moving forward through pool play.

MVLL FALLS TO HAWAII 5 - 2
MVLL FALLS TO HAWAII HILO, 5 - 2 FINAL.
MVLL failed to get runs over the plate and left 6 runners on base in a tough battle against Hawaii. MVLL was unable to capitlize on several opportunties and could only muster 3 hits. MVLL gave up 8 hits to Hawaii including a HOME RUN Blast to left field. MVLL will take the day off tomorrow and prepare for Alaska on Thursday at 2:00 PM.
Stay tuned for updates and futher write up's on tonights game. Lot's of baseball left and MVLL needs to win out in order to secure an opportunity to move into the semi finals.
