Hawaii Beats Manhattan Beach 9 - 1, Goes to World Series

ONTARIO - Hilo Little League rubbed a lot of people the wrong way during the eight-day Senior Division Western Regional Tournament at Jay Littleton Field, but Hawaii on Tuesday proved emphatically that it was the best team, easily defeating Manhattan Beach, 9-1, in the championship game to earn its spot in the World Series in Bangor, Maine.

Hawaii outplayed and outcoached Manhattan Beach throughout a game that was never in doubt. Kodi Medeiros was outstanding on the mound for Hilo, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing just one unearned run on three hits and striking out six.

The only thing that got in Medeiros' way was the 95-pitch count. Medeiros was pulled by Hawaii manager Kaha Wong after racking up 94 pitches.

Quintin Torres-Costa came in to close out the game, and the championship, and the hard-throwing lefty didn't disappoint.

Much of the week was focused on nonbaseball drama, with the Hawaii team that celebrated raucously in its emotional victory over Rocklin on Saturday night and a run-in between coaches last night in the game against Chino.

But an emotional Wong said after the game Tuesday that all the accountability lies with him.

"We're proud of what we accomplished on the field," Wong said, "but we overreacted against Rocklin and did things against Chino that should have never happened, and it's not something we condone.

"I am the manager, so I take responsibility for this. If we come back, we're going to make sure this never happens again, because we don't want Hawaii represented like this."

Bad blood grows even worse - Hawaii show's true colors

ONTARIO - The bad blood between Hawaii and the rest of the nine-team field got even worse in Monday's Little League Senior Division Western Regional semifinals at Jay Littleton Field.

Western Region Little League Director James Gerstenslager was on site, but the tensions didn't diminish.

Korin Medeiros hit a three-run home run in the first inning to get Hilo off to a fast start in a 15-5 victory, and Hawaii first base coach Walter Silva turned to the Chino dugout and said, "This is how you play baseball," followed by profanities, according to Chino manager Henry Herrera and coach Nick Ryan.

"I asked the umpire if he was going to put up with that and I got ejected," Ryan said.

Silva admitted he taunted the Chino dugout but denied using improper language.

"I looked at them and told them that we're going to hit your pitching all game long," Silva said. "I got kicked out because I was bobbing my head around like a bobblehead doll when things started to get heated."

The carryover from Hawaii's win over Rocklin on Saturday and subsequent taunting was evident in the pregame meeting between managers.

"The umpires asked us if we had any questions before we begin the game and I asked, `Are you going to protect our kids from him (Hilo manager Kaha Wong) and his players,' and asked if they were going to put up with what Hilo has been doing to other teams this entire tournament, and the umpires nor Wong took that very well,"

Herrera said.

Herrera later refused to shake hands with Wong, who along with his players left the field immediately after the game and were not available for comment. Silva will not be allowed into Littleton Field tonight in a title-game rematch of last year against defending champion Manhattan Beach.

Herrera openly criticized Hawaii's behavior after beating Rocklin on Saturday. His son, Makaz Herrera, was hit twice Monday and reportedly was asked by a Hawaii player if Henry Herrera was his father.

"They came up and in on my son and I went out to talk to the umpire and he warned both sides and their pitcher and yet he got hit in that at-bat and again no one was ejected," Herrera said. "The umpires are completely intimidated by Hawaii.

"They're bullies, everyone knows it, and there is video of their coach going after a player from Northern California and another one of their players across their side of home plate (after the home run) grabbing his crotch at Northern California, and they (Western Region directors) didn't have the guts to do what's right."

The video was presented to tournament administrator Alan Fitzgerald and Gerstenslager and sent to Little League officials in Williamsport (Pa).

"We sat down with both coaches and watched the video and decided to just move on," Gerstenslager said.

"Williamsport and (Gerstenslager) let down every kid who plays this game the right way by not standing up to bullies and not doing what's right despite having video footage and hundreds of witnesses, including the media," Herrera said.

"They have disgraced the game of baseball and Williamsport showed with its inaction that thugs won't be punished because they didn't have the guts to stop them."

It's the second year in a row in which at least one Hawaii coach was ejected and not allowed to return to the tournament.

"I hope people realize these are 16-year-old young men that are old enough to know better and should be able to win games the right way by celebrating, but without taunting an opponent. Wong obviously condones it," Herrera said.

"They play like they're the victim here, but not one team has had a problem with any other team. There is zero accountability."

Tournament officials said Monday's incidents have been forwarded to Williamsport, where officials will decide if any suspensions should be handed down.

One thing not in question is security will be tight for today's game at 6.

"We are aware of the tension after last year's game between Hawaii and Manhattan Beach and will have extra security added to make sure both teams come and leave safely," Fitzgerald said.

MVLL outslugs Washington in 5 - 3 Loss

Mountain View Little League lost 5-3 in seven innings at Ontario, CA on Sunday, despite outhitting Washington nine to five.

Mountain View Little League was paced by the production of Michael Salazar, who reached base three times. Salazar singled in the first and seventh innings.

Matt Nutting had a strong game at the plate for Washington. Nutting went 2-4 and scored one run. Nutting tripled in the third inning and singled in the sixth inning.

Riley Baker recorded the win for Washington. He allowed one run over one inning. The Washington pitcher struck out none, walked one and surrendered two hits.

Thomas Wright was strong on the mound, as he threw strikes on 53 of his 85 pitches. Wright struck out seven and walked three for Mountain View Little League .

MVLL Finishes Pool Play, loses to Washington 5 - 3

MVLL Senior All Star Update

MVLL Senior All Stars finished pool play today with a 5 – 3 loss to Washington Little League. MVLL stranded 9 runners on base and could only push 3 runs over the plate. MVLL finished 1 – 3 in pool play and a disappointing 4^th place finish in Pool B.

Regardless of the outcome, this was a great experience for each player and the memories will last a lifetime. Each player on the roster contributed and was an involved in the team’s State Championship Success. MVLL has won 3 straight State Championships, and Mountain View Little League is a familiar name at the Western Regional’s. Several key staff, including an umpire took the time to compliment the coaches on the class, and great sportsmanship our team represented. That in itself is an ingredient to being a superior citizen and part of Little Leagues Mission Statement.

We want to thank Darin Olsen, Tom Janikis, Jim Ditroia, and most importantly Sharon Dishner “TEAM MOM” for their time and commitment to our League. Taking 6 days out of a busy schedule to travel out of town, and do what they did is AMAZING.

MVLL Senior All Stars Update

MVLL lost to Chino Valley Little League last night 9 – 1, eliminating any chances for MVLL to advance into the Semi Finals on Monday night. MVLL will play Washington tomorrow (Sunday), at 9:00 AM to complete pool play. MVLL has been unable to move runners across the plate the past two games, making it difficult to compete.

A win tomorrow will give MVLL a 2 - 2 record in pool play and 3rd place finish in Pool B.

Mountain View Little League best Oregon in shootout, 12-9

Scoreboard operators were busy at Ontario, CA on Wednesday as Mountain View Little League and Oregon combined for 21 runs. Mountain View Little League eventually won the offensive battle 12-9.

The two teams combined for 25 hits, including three extra base hits.

Jimmy DiTroia did his best to jumpstart the offense for Mountain View Little League , reaching base three times. He scored three runs and had two RBIs. DiTroia singled in the first inning.

Braedon Price led Oregon's offensive threat, as he got on base three times in the game. He scored two runs and had one RBI. Price doubled in the second inning and singled in the fourth inning.

Nick Carrera recorded the win for Mountain View Little League . He allowed four runs over 1 1/3 innings. The Mountain View Little League pitcher struck out one, walked two and surrendered four hits.

Michael Salazar rose to the occasion out of the bullpen, hurling two innings of shutout ball while racking up two strikeouts and giving up one hit and one walk.

Zach Janikis threw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless ball for Mountain View Little League .

Manhattan Beach Little League Seniors reach Series

Ian McLoughlin delivered the game-winning hit to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Manhattan Beach Little League Senior All-Stars defeated Hilo, Hawaii, 5-4, in the Western Regional Tournament championship game at Jay Littleton Park in Ontario on Tuesday night.

Manhattan Beach had a 4-3 lead going into the top of the seventh inning when Hilo tied the score on a hit batsman, a walk, and an RBI single before reliever Morgan Ascher got out of the jam with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the inning, Bret Collins led off with a two-strike single and Anthony Lombardo walked, setting the stage for McLoughlin, who came through to send Manhattan Beach to the World Series.

Turner Conrad hurled 5 2/3 strong innings for Manhattan Beach.

This marks the first time a baseball team from Manhattan Beach Little League has reached the regionals or the World Series. In 2003, the Manhattan Beach Little League 11- and 12-year-old softball team reached the World Series.

The Manhattan Beach (15- and 16-year-old) All-Stars are 15-0 in tournament play.

The Senior League World Series takes place in Bangor, Maine, Aug. 15-21.

MVLL, Coaches, and Players want to thank you for your support through this run through the Western Regionals. Even though we were unable to win and get to the Championship, we truly appreciate all the support, sponsorships, and great messages.

At the end of the day, we were able to give the kids a great experience and enabled them to compete at a high level and still maintain the mission of little league. "Little League does not create Superior athletes, but Superior Citizens".

The team will be heading back to Scottsdale in the morning and off to School.

FINAL FOUR SET FOR SEMI FINALS TONIGHT

Arizona will face Manhattan Beach Little League tonight in the late game to determine a spot in the Western Regional Sr. Little League Finals. Hawaii the # 1 seed in pool A will face the local Ontario Little League from Creekside Ranch Little League. Arizona is the # 2 seed in Pool A, and will Play the # 1 seed in Pool B (Manhattan Beach LL). Manhattan Beach beat Ontario Little League last night 2 -1 in 8 Innings off a walk off basehit to score the winning run.

MVLL will come out with a stable of strong pitchers and should be able to compete with the team from Manhattan Beach. A win tonight will secure a spot against the winner of the Hawaii & Ontario Little Leagues and will play tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. MVLL is expecting a large crowd tonight being that the two So. California teams are from the local area.

MVLL BEATS NO. CALIF IN ELIMINATION POOL PLAY GAME TO ADVANCE TO SEMI FINALS

Keaton Boysen and Cody Erickson combined a 5 hitter, and MVLL offense erupted for 5 runs on 6 hits in the 2nd inning as MVLL defeated Union City (Northern Calif) Little League 6 - 4, earning a spot in the Western Regional Semifinals on Monday night. Game time is 7 PM.

Boysen (5 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 HBP) and Erickson (2 IP, 0 ER, O H, 1 BB, 2 K) kept the Union City offense in check for most of the day. In the 2nd inning, Erickson and Jimmy Ditroia started the inning with singles, then a RBI double by Joey Mandros, a 2 RBI single by Michael Salazar, and RBI triple by Keaton Boysen, and a RBI Double by Dylan Cozens gave MVLL a early 5 - 0 lead. Erickson's RBI single in the 5th finsihed the scoring for MVLL.

MVLL will play the winner of tonight's game where Southern California (Manhattan Beach), and the Host District 23 (Creekside Ranch) face off. Hawaii will play the loser of tonights game on monday night at 4 PM. MVLL will play tomorow night at 7:00 PM.

MVLL Beats Montana 13 - 1 in 5 Innings

MVLL beat Montana this evening with 11 hits, and solid pitching. MVLL allowed 3 hits, and no walks. Colton Mills pitched 2 complete innings allowing no walks, and 4 strike outs. Ethan Rickert came in for 2 innings and also had 4 strike outs and allowed 1 hit. Cody Erickson came in to close out the top of the 5th innings with 3 strike outs. MVLL had contributions from everyone to put away Montana. Arizona is fresh with pitching and is able to play to win without having to worry about pitchers.

MVLL will face Northern California tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM, and must win or go home. Northern California lost ealier today to Hawaii after having a 8 - 1 lead in the 4th inning. Northern California came back to tie the game 10 - 10, but Hawaii came back strong to win 18 - 11 in 8 innings. A win by MVLL will give them a # 2 seed.
